Dr. Jon Conroy is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon from the United Kingdom, specializing in knee and hip surgery.
Appointed as a consultant in trauma and orthopaedics at Harrogate in 2006, Dr. Jon has extended his expertise to patients in the United Arab Emirates since 2022.
Dr. Jon joined Healthpoint Hospital, Abu Dhabi, to introduce Mako Robotic Hip and Knee Surgery to the region. With over a decade of experience in robotic-assisted surgery, he was the first surgeon north of London to operate with a Mako robot and had personally performed around 1,000 robotic procedures — one of the highest numbers in the UK, before moving to Abu Dhabi.
He has achieved several regional milestones, including performing the first Mako robotic-assisted Uni-Compartment Knee Replacement and Total Hip Replacement in the Middle East, and the first Mako robotic Total Knee Replacement in the UAE.
As a Mako instructor since 2017, Dr. Jon has trained senior surgeons across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe and continues to be actively involved in robotic surgery education. He regularly receives international referrals from patients around the world.
His subspecialty interests include the treatment of sports-related hip and knee conditions such as femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and labral tears, as well as minimally invasive joint replacement, day-case surgery, revision procedures, and second opinions.
Dr. Jon completed his medical training at St Andrews and Manchester Universities (1995), obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (FRCS) in 2004, and completed UK Higher Surgical Training (CCST) in 2006.
His international training included placements at Sunnybrook and St. Michael’s Hospitals, University of Toronto, under Professors Tile, Schatzker, and Waddell, followed by a specialist fellowship in Revision Hip and Knee Surgery at the Prince Charles Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, with Professor Crawford and Dr. English.
Driven by an early interest in mechanical engineering, Dr. Jon completed a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Distinction) at the University of Leeds and conducted research at the Queensland University of Technology. His engineering background has contributed to the design of a non-metallic knee replacement, a globally successful hip implant, and instruments for hip arthroscopy.
Over his career, Dr. Jon has performed more than 4,000 joint replacements, hundreds of complex revision surgeries, and over 1,000 keyhole (arthroscopic) hip procedures, treating numerous professional athletes and high-profile individuals.
An active academic and educator, he has chaired and lectured at major orthopaedic conferences worldwide, with research widely published in peer-reviewed journals. He also served on the British Hip Society’s Non-Arthroplasty Hip Registry, helping to develop the world’s first registry dedicated to hip preservation surgery.
In recognition of his clinical and academic contributions, Dr. Jon was appointed Adjunct Clinical Professor, Department of Surgery, at Khalifa University, Abu Dhabi, in 2022.
Previously, he served as a Board Member and Head of Surgical Services at Harrogate Hospital in the UK, overseeing multiple surgical departments including anaesthesia, paediatrics, and obstetrics & gynaecology.
Dr. Jon is deeply committed to patient care, focusing on personalized treatment plans and non-surgical options whenever possible. He believes in a safe, evidence-based approach to new technologies, ensuring he is thoroughly trained and experienced before introducing innovative techniques into his practice.
