Partial Knee Replacement Surgeon

When Might You Need a Robotic-Assisted Partial Knee Replacement?

If knee pain is beginning to limit your daily activities but only affects one part of the joint, you may be a candidate for a robotic-assisted partial knee replacement. Many patients reach this stage when pain and stiffness are no longer manageable with medication, physiotherapy, or lifestyle changes — yet the entire knee does not need to be replaced.

Common signs you may benefit from a partial knee replacement include:

  • Pain localised to one area of the knee (often the inner or outer side)
  • Persistent stiffness that limits walking or climbing stairs
  • Pain at night or after activity that is no longer relieved by rest or medication
  • Difficulty with everyday tasks, such as standing from a chair or getting in and out of a car
  • Reduced mobility that begins to affect work, exercise, or social activities

The Mako robotic-assisted system allows for exceptional precision in planning and performing partial knee replacement. This ensures optimal implant positioning, helps preserve healthy bone and tissue, and supports faster recovery and a more natural-feeling knee.

If your knee pain is affecting your lifestyle but not your entire joint, a robotic-assisted partial knee replacement may offer an advanced, minimally invasive solution — helping you return to movement and comfort sooner.

FAQs

MakoTM partial knee replacement with Jon Conroy explained

Jon Conroy surgeon describes the benefits of robotic knee surgery. Accuracy, pre operation planning. Quicker recovery.

Appointments are available at Healthpoint Hospital, Abu Dhabi.

Can I have both knees replaced at the same time?

Yes you can. As long as you are fit enough for a prolonged anaesthetic and have a normal amount of blood loss after your first knee replacement.

The benefits are a quicker overall recovery and less anaesthetic risk than two separate procedures.

A downside is the challenge of the recovery with both knees affected.

Does Mr Conroy perform knee replacements or is he a hip surgeon?

Mr Conroy has performed well over 1,000 knee replacements. He completed a knee fellowship in 2005 under Mr London in Harrogate. He subsequently completed a hip and knee revision fellowship in Brisbane Australia under Prof Crawford. This included training in computer assisted knee replacement.

Should I have my hip or knee replacement first?

If you are unfortunate enough to have hip and knee arthritis on the same side Mr Conroy will usually advise that you have your hip replacement first. A well functioning hip allows the knee to bend during knee replacement recovery avoiding long term stiffness.

Often patients have referred pain from the hip to the knee. If this is not considered in a physical assessment a patient may have an unnecessary knee procedure.

Are knee replacements less successful than hip replacements?

Both hip and knee replacements are amongst the most successful operations for improving quality of life. Knee replacement recovery can be more challenging due to pain and swelling at a time when physiotherapy is needed to maintain range of motion of the knee.

Use your consultation to ask questions about the risks and rewards of your procedure. Please include anything you feel may be important or specific to your expectations of the surgery. You will be given verbal and written information on the risks of surgery.
